Everybody should have a Power of Attorney. However, nobody should just have a Power of Attorney. Let me explain. These are complicated and misunderstood documents. Often clients bring me a Power of Attorney thinking that everything is set. All too often what they have does not provide the chosen agent with the powers to accomplish what is needed. This could be because it requires actions of a third person to become effective. Sometimes the powers granted are inadequate. Still others name multiple agents who cannot agree.
An Advanced Healthcare Directive instructs caregivers they type of care you want or wish to be withheld at the end of your life. These choices are important because without them the state presumes that you want your life preserved even if that means the use of artificial means to feed you. Using Oklahoma’s standard form may cause you to be kept alive indefinitely. This presentation will clarify the choices an put you in control
